| The reality in South Africa |
| |
Science, engineering and technology (SET) are the keys to:
- Economic growth
- Job creation, and
- Social upliftment
|
South Africa is faced with:
- The "brain drain" - large numbers of SET graduates emigrate every year
- An aging research community - the average age of researchers is increasing
- A male dominated SET environment
We are not actively encouraging the largest pool of expertise in the country - the women who make up 52% of South African population. |
| |
In fact, women in SET are usually:
- Younger and less qualified than men
- In receipt of a significantly smaller slice of the research inputs, rewards and recognition on offer
- Clustered in scientific domains or disciplinary areas which have traditionally been considered women’s domains

The complete research study, from which these facts were extracted, is entitled Facing the facts: Women’s participation in Science, Engineering and Technology in South Africa and is available online at www.sarg.org.za |
