The reality in South Africa

Science, engineering and technology (SET) are the keys to:
  • Economic growth
  • Job creation, and
  • Social upliftment
South Africa is faced with:
  • The "brain drain" - large numbers of SET graduates emigrate every year
  • An aging research community - the average age of researchers is increasing
  • A male dominated SET environment
We are not actively encouraging the largest pool of expertise in the country - the women who make up 52% of South African population.

In fact, women in SET are usually:
  • Younger and less qualified than men

  • In receipt of a significantly smaller slice of the research inputs, rewards and recognition on offer

  • Clustered in scientific domains or disciplinary areas which have traditionally been considered women’s domains

The complete research study, from which these facts were extracted, is entitled Facing the facts: Women’s participation in Science, Engineering and Technology in South Africa and is available online at www.sarg.org.za
